Centre of the Cell opens

Centre of the Cell is part of the Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Sciences at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. The project idea was conceived to raise awareness of the research being carried out there.

When the new research building was being planned, the university decided to incorporate a space to allow a wide range of people some insight in to the research taking place there. To carry this out a ‘pod’ was created as an integral part of the building, suspended over the research laboratories.

Centre of the Cell is an experience comprised of five scenes: two scenes involve interactive games played through touch tables; the others are visual, interactive film presentations projected onto screens in the ceiling. The show provides exciting learning experiences targeted towards Key Stage 2, 3 and 4 of the English and Welsh national curriculum.

D J Willrich Ltd was brought in by lead contractor, Beck Interiors, to work with Land Design Studio to realise the whole experience. DJW created the five different scenes, providing all the hardware and the core game software. DJW filmed and produced all the content for the film presentations, and programmed the whole show to be simply controlled on a portable master control.
